🌼 Step 1
The daisy
🎯 Goal of this step
Bring the four edges that have white up around the yellow centre, white side facing up. It looks like a daisy (white petals, yellow middle). Ignore the corners and the edges’ other colour for now.
💡 The idea — why it works
The top face (around yellow) is a safe parking area. We park all the white edges there first, and in step 2 we send them down one at a time. That is much easier than building the white cross directly.
Two rules that cover every case
- Turn the face that makes white point up. If the white edge is in the middle layer, turn the face that does not carry the white sticker; it carries the white sticker up to the top.
- Before lifting, make sure the target slot is empty. If a white edge is already parked in the top slot you’re about to fill, turn U first, or the parked edge gets knocked down.
How to do it
- Hold yellow on top and look for edges with white (two-coloured pieces where one colour is white)
- Check which layer it is in and which way the white sticker faces, and match it to an example above
- Turn U so the top slot that will receive it is empty (no white yet), then turn the side face to lift the edge up
- Repeat until all four are up ✿
⚠️ Common mistakes
- A new edge goes up and an old one falls down → you forgot to turn U to free the slot first
- The white sticker ends up on top but facing sideways → not finished yet; use “Top layer, but white faces out”
- Confusing white corners with white edges → this step only uses edges (two colours)
