🟨 Step 6

Orient the corners (Sune)

🎯 Goal of this step

Make the whole top face yellow by “twisting” the four corners so yellow faces up (the side colours don’t need to match yet).

💡 The idea — why it works

Sune, RUR'URU2R', twists three top corners without breaking the first two layers or the yellow cross.

First count the corners with yellow up, then hold the cube by this rule (always judged by the front-left corner):

  • 1 corner (a fish) → put the yellow-up corner at front-left
  • 0 corners → the front-left corner’s yellow faces left
  • 2 corners → the front-left corner’s yellow faces the front

Do Sune, count again and repeat with the same rule. At most 3 times you’ll have a yellow face (each time you get a fish, and the right fish finishes it).

Did you know: you can never have just one twisted corner, because the corners’ twists always add up to a multiple of 3.

Say it as a rhythm: “R U R’ U — R U2 R’”

The 7 standard case names

Speedcubers name the 7 corner patterns (corner OLL): Sune, Anti-Sune, H, Pi, U (headlights), T and L (diagonal) — the examples above show every one. For now Sune alone solves them all; later you can learn a dedicated algorithm for each and finish in one go.

⚠️ Common mistakes
  • The sides look scrambled after the algorithm → that’s normal! This step only cares about the yellow top; steps 7–8 fix the sides
  • The yellow cross disappeared → the algorithm went wrong (usually U and U2 mixed up at the end)
  • Looking at the wrong corner → always check front-left-top
